Gender Differences in Internet Use for Academic Purposes Among Students of University of Lagos

This study examined gender-based differences in internet use for academic purposes among undergraduate students at the University of Lagos, in Lagos State, South West Nigeria. Despite the growing integration of internet resources into academic life, evidence suggests that demographic factors, including gender, may influence patterns of access and use. A descriptive survey design was adopted, and a structured questionnaire was administered to 400 students drawn from six faculties. The study found that male students reported higher frequency of internet use for academic research compared to female students, though female students demonstrated more discernment in evaluating online sources. Differences were also observed in preferred platforms: male students leaned more heavily on YouTube and general search engines, while female students showed relatively higher use of structured academic databases when they were aware of them. The study recommended that the university library design gender-sensitive digital literacy programmes and ensure that internet access facilities are equitably available to all students regardless of gender.
