Geophysical Investigation of Iron Ore Occurrences in Agbaja Plateau, Kogi State, North Central Nigeria

📖 ABSTRACT/OVERVIEW

The Agbaja Plateau iron ore deposit in Kogi State is one of Nigeria's largest known iron ore occurrences and has attracted periodic investigation for its economic potential, yet systematic geophysical delineation of the ore body geometry at depth remains incomplete. This study combines ground magnetic profiling and vertical electrical sounding to characterise the geometry and vertical extent of the iron ore deposit in the Itakpe-Agbaja corridor. Proton precession magnetometer surveys were conducted along 14 parallel profiles oriented perpendicular to the dominant geological strike, with station spacing of 50 metres. Magnetic data were subjected to reduction to the pole, first vertical derivative, and Euler deconvolution processing. VES measurements at 20 stations provided resistivity depth profiles for correlation with the magnetic models. Magnetic anomaly maps reveal two high-amplitude positive anomalies in excess of 1,200 nanoteslas positioned over known iron ore occurrences, with Euler deconvolution estimating source depths of 15 to 80 metres below surface. Low resistivity values at depths corresponding to the modelled magnetic source depths in VES results corroborate the presence of magnetite-rich ore. Comparison with published borehole core descriptions from Nigerian Mining Corporation exploration validates the geophysical interpretation. The study provides a three-dimensional ore body model that can guide future drilling and resource estimation programmes. Keywords: iron ore, ground magnetics, VES, Agbaja Plateau, Kogi State
