📖 ABSTRACT/OVERVIEW
Effective solid waste management in rapidly growing urban centres requires spatially optimised infrastructure planning. This study applies GIS to support spatial planning for solid waste collection and disposal in the Abuja Federal Capital Territory. Waste generation zones are identified using population density maps and land use classification derived from Sentinel-2 imagery. Existing waste collection routes and transfer station locations are digitised and analysed for coverage efficiency using service area analysis. Vehicle routing optimisation using network analysis tools in ArcGIS is applied to redesign collection routes for minimum travel distance and maximum coverage. Results demonstrate that route redesign could reduce collection vehicle travel distances by approximately 23 percent, translating to significant fuel cost savings for the Abuja Environmental Protection Board. A spatial database of waste infrastructure assets is developed to support fleet management and infrastructure maintenance scheduling. The study recommends adopting a GIS-enabled waste management information system as part of the FCT Administration's smart city infrastructure programme.
