Graphic Design Standards and Brand Identity Management in Nigerian Media Organisations

📖 ABSTRACT/OVERVIEW

Brand identity management through consistent and professionally executed graphic design is a strategic communication imperative for media organisations, shaping audience recognition, credibility, and competitive positioning. This study examines graphic design standards and brand identity management practices in selected Nigerian media organisations including print publishers, television broadcasters, and digital news platforms operating in Lagos, Abuja, and Kano. Primary data are gathered from 45 creative directors, graphic designers, and brand managers through structured questionnaires and in-depth interviews. The study evaluates brand identity guidelines, logo usage consistency, typographic standards, colour system application, and the integration of design quality management into editorial workflows. The theoretical framework draws on brand identity design theory, corporate visual communication scholarship, and the media industry management literature. The study examines whether Nigerian media organisations have formalised brand standards documentation and whether in-house design teams have the professional competency to maintain brand consistency across print, broadcast, and digital channels. The geographic spread of the study across South West, North Central, and North West zones allows for comparison of design practice maturity across regional media markets. Recent literature on African media design has identified under-resourced design functions and inadequate professional training as common challenges. Findings are expected to inform media managers, the National Broadcasting Commission, and graphic design education programme developers in Nigeria. Keywords: graphic design, brand identity, Nigerian media, visual communication, design management
