Grief Ministry in African Christianity: Professional Practice Guidelines for Pastoral Workers in South East Nigeria

This study develops evidence-based professional practice guidelines for grief ministry within African Christian communities in South East Nigeria. The South East is characterised by a strong cultural emphasis on elaborate funeral rites, ancestral belief systems, and communal mourning traditions, which create a distinctive pastoral context for grief ministry. Using a qualitative research design, data are collected from forty bereaved individuals across Abia, Imo, and Enugu states, supplemented by interviews with twenty pastoral workers and five licensed grief counsellors. Thematic analysis of qualitative data identifies culturally specific grief expressions, theological frameworks employed in the mourning process, and the pastoral interventions perceived as most helpful by bereaved persons. Findings indicate that pastoral grief support that acknowledges cultural mourning practices, affirms the hope of resurrection, and provides practical assistance during bereavement periods is most positively received. Guidelines developed from the study address listening practices, lament theology, cultural sensitivity, referral protocols, and self-care for pastoral workers. The study recommends that seminaries and pastoral training programmes in South East Nigeria integrate structured grief ministry modules into their professional training curricula.
