Guidance Counsellors’ Utilisation of Technology in Delivering Career Information to Secondary School Students in Kano State

Digital technology offers transformative potential for enhancing the reach, accessibility, and currency of career information delivered to secondary school students, yet its uptake within Nigerian guidance practice remains limited. This study assessed the extent to which guidance counsellors in Kano State secondary schools utilise technology in delivering career information to students, North West Nigeria. A descriptive survey design was used, with 80 school counsellors from 25 secondary schools across Kano metropolis and satellite local government areas participating. The Technology Utilisation in Career Guidance Inventory was administered alongside a structured infrastructure audit. Descriptive statistics and t-tests were used for analysis. Findings revealed that while most counsellors owned smartphones, fewer than 35 percent reported using digital platforms such as career websites, educational videos, or social media tools in their guidance practice. Inadequate school internet infrastructure, lack of digital skills training, and absence of institutionalised technology policies were the most frequently cited barriers. Counsellors who had received technology-enhanced guidance training were significantly more likely to utilise digital tools. The study recommended that Kano State's education authorities invest in counsellor digital literacy training and school-based internet infrastructure. Partnerships with telecommunications companies for discounted connectivity in school counselling units were proposed as a cost-effective intervention.
