Human Resource Management in Commercial Greenhouse Farms in Kaduna State

Human resource management in commercial agricultural enterprises involves recruiting, training, scheduling, and retaining skilled farm workers whose performance directly determines production efficiency and crop quality. In Kaduna State, in Nigeria's North West geopolitical zone, the growth of commercial greenhouse vegetable operations has created a demand for more structured HR management practices than are typically found in traditional smallholder farming. This study investigates human resource management practices and their effect on operational efficiency in commercial greenhouse farms in Kaduna State. A sample of 30 greenhouse farm enterprises was selected purposively from Kaduna, Zaria, and Kachia areas. Data were collected through structured interviews with farm managers and HR personnel on recruitment approaches, training frequency, worker performance appraisal, compensation structure, and staff turnover rates. A descriptive case study approach was supplemented with comparative performance analysis. Results indicate that farms with structured onboarding and bi-weekly performance review processes had 24 percent lower crop rejection rates and 18 percent lower staff turnover than those without. The majority of farms had no written job descriptions for farm workers, and only 33 percent offered any form of performance-linked incentive. Employee satisfaction surveys were used by fewer than 15 percent of operations. The study recommends that commercial greenhouse operators in Kaduna State adopt simple, scalable HR management frameworks drawing on guidance from agricultural business development service providers and that sector associations develop a model HR policy template for member enterprises.
