Igbo Language Departments as Community Service Hubs: Models of Outreach and Engagement at Nigerian Universities

This study investigates models through which Igbo language departments at Nigerian universities have functioned as community service hubs, delivering language education, cultural programming, and public scholarship to communities beyond their campus boundaries. University community engagement is a mandated third-mission function of Nigerian public universities, yet the specific community service contributions of Igbo language departments have not been systematically documented or evaluated. The research adopts a multi-case study approach across four Igbo language departments at universities in Imo, Anambra, Kogi, and Lagos states, collecting data through interviews with department heads, community programme participants, and local government cultural officers, as well as analysis of department annual reports and community engagement records. Findings identify three operational models: the academic extension model, in which departments offer certificate-level Igbo programmes to community members; the cultural programming model, focused on festivals, exhibitions, and oral literature performances; and the policy advisory model, in which departments provide Igbo language expertise to government agencies and media organisations. Departments with dedicated community engagement budgets and established memoranda of understanding with local governments demonstrate significantly higher community impact. The study provides a comparative assessment rubric for Igbo language department community engagement and recommends its adoption in university performance appraisal frameworks.
