Impact Assessment of Road Infrastructure Development on Rural Market Integration in Ebonyi State, South East Nigeria

This study assesses the impact of road infrastructure development projects on rural market integration and agricultural commodity trade in Ebonyi State, South East Nigeria. Ebonyi State, known as the Salt Lake State and an important rice and yam producing zone, has seen significant road construction activities in recent years, yet the extent to which improved roads translate into better market access and farmer income has not been rigorously assessed. Grounded in spatial economics theory and recent infrastructure-development linkage literature from 2019 to 2024, the study adopts a descriptive survey design. Data are gathered from 250 smallholder farmers, rural market traders, transport operators, and state Ministry of Works officials across four local government areas using structured questionnaires, interviews, and market observation records. Descriptive statistics and bivariate correlation analysis are applied. The study expects to find that improved road access significantly reduces transport costs, expands commodity trading radius, and increases farm gate prices for smallholder farmers in Ebonyi. However, inadequate maintenance of newly constructed roads and gaps in feeder road connectivity to farmlands are expected to limit the full integration benefits. Recommendations will address rural road maintenance financing, the construction of feeder roads linking farms to trunk roads, and the integration of road investment planning with agricultural development programming in Ebonyi State.
