Impact of Hate Speech on Social Cohesion in Kaduna State: A Media Analysis

📖 ABSTRACT/OVERVIEW

This study investigates the impact of hate speech circulating through online media on social cohesion in Kaduna State, North West Nigeria. Kaduna State has experienced severe ethno-religious violence exacerbated by hate speech spread through social media platforms, making it a critical case for understanding the media-social cohesion nexus. This study combines quantitative content analysis of hate speech-related content in social media posts and online forums from Kaduna-based accounts during two major crisis periods in 2021 and 2022, with a community survey of 280 respondents from Kaduna North, Kaduna South, and Chikun local government areas representing Christian and Muslim communities. The content analysis identifies hate speech typology, directional targeting (ethnic or religious), platform of origin, and virality indicators. The survey assesses hate speech exposure, emotional impact, inter-community trust levels, and behavioural responses to violent incitement online. Findings reveal that 68 percent of sampled online hate speech content originates from or is amplified within Kaduna-connected social media communities. Exposure to online hate speech significantly reduces inter-community trust, with high-exposure respondents showing 44 percent lower trust scores than low-exposure equivalents. WhatsApp closed groups are identified as the primary amplification platform. Most respondents (71 percent) have received inflammatory messages urging community defence. The study concludes that online hate speech is a significant threat to social cohesion in Kaduna. It recommends targeted platform regulation, inter-community dialogue programmes, and peace journalism training for online content creators in the state.
