Impact of Information and Communication Technology on Teaching Efficiency in Secondary Schools in Imo State

This study assesses the impact of information and communication technology adoption on teaching efficiency in public secondary schools in Imo State, South East Nigeria. The integration of digital tools in secondary school instruction has been promoted by national education policies as a strategy for improving pedagogical quality and preparing students for a knowledge-based economy. However, the extent to which ICT adoption has translated into tangible improvements in teaching efficiency in Imo State remains insufficiently investigated. The study employs a descriptive survey design and samples 340 teachers and ICT coordinators from 40 public secondary schools across Imo North, South, and West senatorial zones. A validated questionnaire, coupled with an observational instrument, serves as data sources, and analysis employs mean ratings, standard deviation, and regression analysis. The study is anchored on the Technology Acceptance Model. Findings reveal that teachers who regularly use digital tools including projectors, educational software, and internet resources demonstrate significantly higher instructional efficiency and student engagement compared to those relying exclusively on traditional chalk-and-talk methods. The major barriers to ICT adoption include poor electricity supply, limited device availability, and inadequate technical training. The study recommends targeted investment in school ICT infrastructure and mandatory digital literacy training for teachers in the state.
