Impact of Library Instruction on Academic Performance of Students in Nnamdi Azikiwe University Awka

This study examined the impact of library instruction on the academic performance of undergraduate students at Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Awka, in Anambra State, South East Nigeria. Library instruction programmes equip students with research skills that are directly applicable to coursework, thesis writing, and professional practice. A descriptive survey design was employed, with data collected from 260 students who had attended at least one formal library instruction session within the current academic year. Academic performance was assessed through self-reported grade point averages, supplemented by analysis of research project scores provided by heads of department. The study found a significant positive relationship between participation in library instruction and self-reported improvements in research skills and academic grades. Students who attended multiple sessions demonstrated higher information literacy scores than those who attended once. The study recommended that library instruction be embedded into the university curriculum as a compulsory first-year course and that instruction sessions be tailored to specific disciplinary research needs.
