Impact of Principal-Teacher Communication on Staff Morale in Secondary Schools in Abia State

This study examines the impact of principal-teacher communication on staff morale in public secondary schools in Abia State, South East Nigeria. Effective communication between school leaders and teaching staff is a foundational element of school organisational health, influencing teacher commitment, job satisfaction, and willingness to invest discretionary effort in school improvement. In Abia State, recurring reports of poor staff relations and low teacher morale in public secondary schools have raised concerns about the communication practices of school leadership. A descriptive survey design was adopted, with questionnaires administered to 280 teachers across 20 public secondary schools in Umuahia, Aba, and Ohafia educational zones. Principal-teacher communication was assessed across dimensions of clarity, frequency, openness, and feedback quality using an adapted Communication Satisfaction Questionnaire. Teacher morale was measured using a validated staff morale scale covering professional fulfilment, interpersonal relations, and institutional commitment. Pearson correlation and regression analysis were applied. Results indicate that all four communication dimensions are significantly and positively associated with teacher morale. Openness of communication and quality of feedback emerged as the strongest predictors. Principals who regularly consulted teachers in decision-making recorded the highest morale scores. The study concludes that principal-teacher communication quality is a significant determinant of staff morale in Abia State secondary schools. It recommends that the Abia State Secondary Education Management Board incorporate communication skills development into its principal capacity-building programme and establish formal staff feedback mechanisms in all public secondary schools.
