Impact of Road Infrastructure on Tourism Development in Cross River State, South South Nigeria

This study investigates the impact of road infrastructure on tourism development in Cross River State, one of Nigeria's most tourism-endowed states in the South South geopolitical zone. The state hosts notable attractions including Obudu Mountain Resort, Calabar Carnival, and Afi Mountain Wildlife Sanctuary. However, poor road networks connecting these sites to urban centres have reportedly hindered tourist access and visitor satisfaction. Using a descriptive survey design, data are collected from 180 tourists and tour operators through structured questionnaires and semi-structured interviews. Findings indicate that road conditions significantly affect tourists' willingness to visit rural and ecotourism sites, with 74 percent of respondents citing poor access roads as a major deterrent. Tour operators also report increased vehicle maintenance costs and reduced trip frequency due to road deterioration. The study establishes a moderate positive correlation between road quality ratings and tourist arrival numbers at selected sites. It recommends urgent public investment in road rehabilitation linking tourism nodes and greater collaboration between the Cross River State Tourism Bureau and the Federal Ministry of Works. Public-private partnerships are also proposed to fast-track road improvements along key tourist corridors. The findings contribute to policy discussions on infrastructure and sustainable tourism development in Nigeria.
