Impact of Technology Incubators on Startup Survival in Lagos Tech Ecosystem

This study examines the impact of technology business incubators on the survival and early growth of startups in the Lagos technology ecosystem, South West Nigeria. Lagos hosts over 30 operational technology incubators and accelerators, including Co-Creation Hub, Ventures Platform, and Wennovation Hub, making it a productive context for assessing the value that incubation support adds to early-stage ventures. The study employs a comparative descriptive design, contrasting a cohort of 80 startups that completed formal incubator programmes between 2019 and 2022 with a matched group of 80 self-funded startups of similar age and sector that operated outside any incubator. Startup survival, defined as continued active operation at the time of data collection, and revenue milestone achievement are used as outcome variables. Data were collected through a structured questionnaire administered to startup founders. Findings indicate that incubated startups show a 12-percentage-point higher three-year survival rate than non-incubated comparators. Incubated startups are also significantly more likely to have secured formal investment by the end of the comparison period. Mentorship access and alumni network connectivity are rated by incubated founders as the most valuable incubator benefits, ahead of office space and seed funding. The weakest incubator benefit area is market linkage facilitation, suggesting that connecting startups with paying customers remains an underdeveloped service. Recommendations include incentive mechanisms for incubators to develop corporate client matching programmes as a core service offering.
