Impact of Total Quality Management on Academic Standards in Business Education Departments in Federal Polytechnics in South West Nigeria

This study examined the impact of Total Quality Management on academic standards in Business Education departments in federal polytechnics in South West Nigeria. Total Quality Management is a management philosophy centered on continuous improvement, customer focus, and employee involvement. When applied in educational settings, TQM principles have been associated with improved curriculum quality, stronger student outcomes, and enhanced institutional reputation. The extent to which federal polytechnics in the South West zone are leveraging TQM to elevate Business Education standards is the focus of this inquiry. A descriptive survey design was employed. The population comprised 200 academic staff and 80 administrative officers in Business Education departments across four federal polytechnics in Ogun, Oyo, and Ondo States. A sample of 140 respondents was selected through stratified random sampling. A validated TQM Implementation Scale and Academic Standards Rating Instrument were used for data collection. Mean, standard deviation, and Pearson correlation were employed for analysis. Findings indicate a significant positive relationship between TQM practice levels and academic standards, with staff training, stakeholder feedback mechanisms, and accreditation compliance being the strongest TQM dimensions linked to quality outcomes. The study recommends that federal polytechnic management in the South West should institutionalize TQM frameworks in Business Education departments through dedicated quality assurance committees, regular curriculum reviews, and industry engagement protocols.
