Impact of Training and Development Programmes on Employee Performance: A Case Study of Access Bank Plc, Lagos

📖 ABSTRACT/OVERVIEW

This study examines the impact of training and development programmes on employee performance at Access Bank Plc, with specific focus on its operations in Lagos, Nigeria's South West commercial hub. As the banking industry becomes increasingly competitive and technology-driven, banks must invest in human capital development to sustain service quality and operational excellence. This research employs a case study design, with data obtained through structured questionnaires administered to 100 bank employees across three Lagos branches. Data analysis was conducted using descriptive statistics and simple regression analysis. The study investigates the influence of on-the-job training, off-the-job training, e-learning platforms, and mentorship programmes on individual performance outcomes such as task completion rate, customer satisfaction, and compliance adherence. Findings reveal that structured training interventions, particularly those aligned with specific job functions, significantly improve employee performance metrics. E-learning programmes were found to be especially effective in improving compliance knowledge and digital banking competencies. However, the study notes that training frequency and post-training reinforcement remain inconsistent across branches, limiting the sustainability of performance gains. The research recommends that Access Bank institutionalise a continuous learning culture by scheduling quarterly competency assessments and linking training outcomes to promotion criteria. This study adds to the growing body of Nigerian banking sector research emphasising the strategic value of human resource development.
