Implementation of a Secure Mobile Banking Application for Rural Anambra State Cooperative Societies

Rural cooperative societies in Anambra State manage significant community savings pools yet operate largely outside the formal banking system, relying on manual ledgers and cash-based transactions that expose members to fraud and record-keeping errors. This study implements a secure mobile banking application for rural cooperative societies in Anambra State, enabling member contributions, loan disbursements, balance enquiries, and transaction history access via smartphones, with USSD fallback for feature phone users. The application was developed using Flutter for cross-platform mobile deployment, with a Node.js REST API backend and MongoDB as the database. Security features include end-to-end TLS encryption, TOTP-based two-factor authentication, and session timeout management. Africa's Talking API was integrated for USSD and SMS transaction notification. System evaluation involved three cooperative societies in rural Anambra LGAs, with 150 members enrolled over an eight-week pilot period. Results indicate that transaction recording accuracy reached 100 percent against manual ledger cross-verification. Member savings contribution regularity improved by 29 percent compared to the preceding manual period. Fraudulent transaction attempts during penetration testing were blocked in all scenarios. Member satisfaction scores averaged 4.3 out of 5. The study concludes that secure mobile banking applications significantly improve financial governance for rural cooperative societies in Anambra State. Recommendations include Central Bank of Nigeria regulatory compliance review and biometric authentication integration.
