Implementation of a Student Scholarship Portal for a State University in Imo State

📖 ABSTRACT/OVERVIEW

Manual processing of scholarship applications at state universities in Imo State is characterised by delays, lost documents, and lack of transparency, discouraging eligible students from applying. This study presents the design and implementation of an online scholarship portal for a state university in Imo State, South East Nigeria. The portal was built using Laravel (PHP) and MySQL, with a Bootstrap-based responsive interface. It supports online application submission, document upload, eligibility filtering based on academic standing and financial criteria, application status tracking, and an administrative review and approval workflow. User requirement elicitation involved 60 students and 12 scholarship administrators at the target university. Six scholarship categories were configured, with custom eligibility rules per category. Testing included unit testing of eligibility logic, integration testing of document upload and notification modules, and user acceptance testing with 40 student volunteers. Results showed 100 percent accuracy in eligibility computation across 300 test cases. Post-testing surveys indicated that 91 percent of student participants preferred the online portal to the previous manual process. Administrative staff estimated a 60 percent reduction in processing time per application cycle. The portal was deployed on the university's intranet server and launched for use in the 2023/2024 academic year. The study recommends adoption of similar portals at federal and state universities across South East Nigeria to improve scholarship access equity.
