Indigenous Visual Languages and Contemporary Graphic Design Practice in Nigeria

The relationship between Nigeria's rich traditions of indigenous visual languages, including Nsibidi symbols, Adinkra-adjacent motifs, Uli body art patterns, and geometric Islamic design vocabularies, and the practice of contemporary graphic design has attracted growing scholarly interest as designers seek culturally grounded design alternatives to imported visual conventions. This study analyses how indigenous visual languages are being translated into contemporary graphic design practice in Nigeria, focusing on design work produced in Lagos, Abuja, and Kano between 2019 and 2024. A mixed-methods design is employed, combining content analysis of 150 graphic design works identified through portfolios, awards databases, and design publications with in-depth interviews with 20 graphic designers whose work engages with indigenous visual systems. The study examines the specific visual languages referenced, the interpretive strategies used to translate indigenous symbols into functional design applications, and the reception of these works by clients and audiences. The theoretical framework draws on design theory, the indigenous knowledge systems literature, and the postcolonial cultural production scholarship. The study examines the tension between authentic cultural engagement and the aestheticisation of indigenous symbols as decorative design elements divorced from their original meanings. Recent literature on African graphic design has identified this tension as a central ethical and creative challenge for practitioners drawing on heritage visual systems. Findings contribute to design theory and practice and provide resources for graphic design educators integrating African visual culture into curricula.
