Influence of Early Childhood Education on Cognitive Development in Rural Communities in Kano State

📖 ABSTRACT/OVERVIEW

This study explores the influence of early childhood education on cognitive development among children aged 3 to 6 years in rural communities of Kano State, North West Nigeria. The expansion of early childhood care and development centres across Nigeria's northern geopolitical zones has renewed scholarly interest in understanding whether formal preschool attendance yields measurable cognitive gains in low-resource rural settings. Employing a quasi-experimental design, the study compared cognitive performance between 180 children attending registered Early Childhood Care and Development centres and 160 children with no preschool experience. Cognitive development was assessed using the Griffiths Mental Development Scales adapted for Nigerian children, covering subscales for locomotor, personal-social, hearing and language, eye-hand coordination, and performance skills. Results demonstrate that children with preschool experience outperformed their counterparts on language development and problem-solving tasks, with effect sizes considered educationally significant. Teachers' qualifications and the quality of classroom materials emerged as important moderating variables. The findings support continued investment in rural Early Childhood Care and Development infrastructure and teacher training in Kano State. Recommendations are made to state education authorities to prioritise curriculum quality and community sensitisation to increase enrolment rates among rural households. Keywords: early childhood education, cognitive development, rural communities, Kano State, preschool attendance.
