Influence of Home Background on Academic Achievement of Primary School Pupils in Bauchi State

📖 ABSTRACT/OVERVIEW

This study examines the influence of home background on the academic achievement of primary school pupils in Bauchi State, North East Nigeria. Family socioeconomic status, parental educational attainment, and home learning environment have been consistently linked to differences in pupil performance in developing country contexts, yet empirical investigations specific to Bauchi State remain limited. The study adopts a descriptive survey design with a sample of 350 Primary Five pupils and their parents or guardians drawn from public schools in Bauchi, Misau, and Alkaleri local government areas. Data were collected using a home background questionnaire and pupils' terminal examination scores in English Language and Mathematics. Multiple regression analysis was employed to determine the predictive power of selected home background variables. The study is guided by Bourdieu's Social Reproduction Theory and the Coleman Report Framework. Findings are anticipated to confirm that pupils from homes with higher levels of educational capital and conducive learning environments perform significantly better than peers from disadvantaged backgrounds. The study also explores gender differences in how home background variables affect academic outcomes. Recommendations are directed at the Bauchi State Universal Basic Education Board, community leaders, and non-governmental organisations on designing interventions that compensate for home disadvantage, including after-school tutoring and parental literacy programmes. The findings contribute to the evidence base for equity-focused educational policy in North East Nigeria. Keywords: home background, academic achievement, primary school, Bauchi State, socioeconomic status
