Information Management Practices in Non-Governmental Organisations in Abuja

This study investigated information management practices in selected non-governmental organisations operating in the Federal Capital Territory, Abuja, North Central Nigeria. Non-governmental organisations manage substantial volumes of information related to project documentation, donor reporting, beneficiary data, and policy advocacy, making effective information management critical to organisational performance. A qualitative case study design was employed, and data were gathered from information officers, programme directors, and executive staff in ten NGOs through in-depth interviews and document review. The study found that information management practices were largely informal and fragmented, with limited use of records management systems or document management software. Most NGOs lacked information management policies, and knowledge transfer between staff was poorly structured, creating institutional memory loss when staff departed. The study recommended the development of organisational information management policies, the procurement of affordable document management platforms, and the designation of trained information officers within NGO structures.
