Integrating Ubuntu Philosophy into Guidance and Counselling Theory and Practice in Sub-Saharan Africa: Towards a New Paradigm

Ubuntu, the African philosophical principle affirming that personhood is constituted through relational interdependence, offers a transformative conceptual basis for rethinking counselling theory and practice in sub-Saharan African contexts where Western individualist frameworks remain dominant. This study aimed to develop a theoretical framework integrating Ubuntu philosophy into guidance and counselling theory and practice, with particular relevance to the Nigerian educational and mental health context. A philosophical analysis and theoretical development design was employed, drawing on Ubuntu scholarship from South African, Ghanaian, and Nigerian philosophical traditions alongside critical engagement with major counselling theories. Phase 1 involved systematic philosophical analysis of Ubuntu texts. Phase 2 involved participatory theoretical development workshops with 40 Nigerian counselling academics, practitioners, and cultural philosophers across six geopolitical zones. Phase 3 involved empirical grounding through interviews with 50 counsellors reflecting on how Ubuntu principles currently and potentially manifest in their practice. Integrative thematic analysis and theoretical synthesis were applied. The resulting Ubuntu-Counselling Integration Framework (UCIF) proposes five core principles: communal healing, relational accountability, elder-mediated guidance, collective storytelling, and spiritual grounding. The framework challenges Eurocentrism in counselling theory and provides an original paradigmatic contribution to African counselling psychology.
