Intercession and Community Transformation: A Study of Prayer Mountains in Nasarawa State

This study explores the role of prayer mountains and intercessory ministry centres in facilitating perceived community transformation in Nasarawa State, North Central Nigeria. Prayer mountains have proliferated across Nigeria in recent decades, attracting thousands of believers who undertake extended prayer retreats with the expectation of spiritual breakthroughs, healing, and national transformation. Using a qualitative descriptive design, data are gathered from thirty interviewees who have participated in prayer retreats at five prayer mountains located in Lafia, Akwanga, and Doma, supplemented by interviews with eight ministry leaders and a review of testimonial records. Findings indicate that prayer mountain participants report significant personal transformations including healing, deliverance from addiction, career breakthroughs, and restored family relationships. The communal dimension of extended intercession is cited as fostering a sense of solidarity, hope, and shared spiritual purpose. However, the study also identifies concerns about financial exploitation of vulnerable participants, theologically questionable practices, and the withdrawal of participants from regular church life. The research recommends that denominations and theological educators engage constructively with prayer mountain ministries, providing theological oversight and accountability frameworks that protect participants while affirming the legitimate spiritual benefits of extended prayer disciplines.
