International Migration and the Nigerian Diaspora: Historical Patterns and Contemporary Policy Implications

This study examines the historical patterns of Nigerian international migration from the early twentieth century to the present, tracing the evolution of the Nigerian diaspora from colonial-era student migrants to contemporary labour and asylum migration, and assessing the policy implications of diaspora engagement for Nigeria's development. The Nigerian diaspora, estimated at over 17 million persons globally, is the largest African diaspora by population and represents a significant source of financial remittances, skills transfer, and diplomatic influence. Using a descriptive analytical design, the study reviews immigration statistics from destination countries, Nigerian emigration survey data, diaspora policy documents, and secondary academic literature published between 2020 and 2024. The Transnationalism Theory and the Migration and Development Framework provide the conceptual anchors. Findings indicate that Nigeria receives the highest volume of remittances in sub-Saharan Africa, with annual flows exceeding 20 billion US dollars in recent years. However, the ongoing brain drain, particularly in the healthcare and engineering sectors, represents a significant human capital loss that partly offsets remittance benefits. Recommendations include a comprehensive national diaspora engagement policy coordinating remittances, skills return, and diaspora investment attraction.
