Investigation of Digital Divide Indicators Between Urban and Rural Secondary Schools in Zamfara State, North West Nigeria

The digital divide between urban and rural educational institutions in Nigeria perpetuates inequality in learning outcomes and future digital employability, and its specific dimensions in underserved states such as Zamfara in North West Nigeria require empirical documentation. This study investigates digital divide indicators between urban and rural secondary schools in Zamfara State. A comparative descriptive survey design was applied to 20 urban and 20 rural secondary schools, with data collected from 280 teachers and 40 school administrators through structured questionnaires and hardware inventory checklists. Digital divide indicators measured included computer-to-student ratios, internet connectivity availability, ICT teacher qualifications, frequency of ICT-integrated lessons, and student ICT skill proficiency. Descriptive statistics and independent samples t-tests were computed in SPSS. Available digital divide literature from North West Nigeria consistently identifies rural schools as having computer-to-student ratios ten to fifteen times lower than urban counterparts, with internet connectivity rates below 20 percent in rural settings. The Digital Divide Framework by van Dijk and the Access to Information Theory provide the conceptual basis. Findings confirm statistically significant differences across all measured indicators, with rural schools showing particularly severe gaps in qualified ICT personnel and functional equipment. Recommendations include Zamfara State ICT education equalization grants, mobile digital literacy vans for rural school circuits, and solar-powered school computer lab programmes.
