Investigation of Gender Representation in Nollywood Films and Audience Reception in Anambra State

📖 ABSTRACT/OVERVIEW

Gender representation in Nollywood cinema reflects and reinforces dominant social attitudes toward women and men, with potential implications for audience perception of gender roles in real-life contexts. This study investigated gender representation patterns in selected Nollywood films and examined how audiences in Anambra State received and interpreted these representations. A content analysis of 20 high-grossing Nollywood films released between 2020 and 2023 was conducted, applying a gender representation coding framework derived from feminist media studies. Simultaneously, a reception study was conducted through focus group discussions with 60 adult residents of Awka and Onitsha. Content analysis results showed that female characters were predominantly cast in domestic, romantic, or victimhood roles in 72.5 percent of analysed films, while male characters held agentic roles in 78.3 percent. Female characters in professional roles were underrepresented relative to male counterparts by a ratio of 1:4.2. Audience focus groups revealed ambivalent reception, with 64.7 percent of participants acknowledging gender stereotyping in Nollywood while simultaneously expressing enjoyment of content. Younger female participants were more critical of stereotypical representations than older respondents. The study concludes that Nollywood perpetuates limited gender portrayals while maintaining strong audience connection, suggesting that progressive change must be driven internally by filmmakers rather than through audience pressure alone. Recommendations include gender sensitivity training in Nollywood production communities and greater investment in films featuring complex female protagonists.
