📖 ABSTRACT/OVERVIEW
Nigerian hip-hop music videos have evolved from low-budget productions into sophisticated visual art products with distinct aesthetic conventions, narrative strategies, and global market positioning that merit documentation as part of the broader study of Nigerian popular creative culture. This study investigated the aesthetic development of Nigerian hip-hop music videos, focusing on Lagos-based productions from 2018 to 2023. A descriptive mixed-methods design was employed, combining content analysis of 40 music videos from major Lagos-based hip-hop artists with structured interviews with eight music video directors working in the industry. Content analysis examined cinematographic choices, colour grading conventions, narrative structure, lifestyle iconography, and cultural visual references. Director interviews captured creative process, client influence, and aesthetic philosophy. Results showed a clear trajectory toward cinematic production values, with 80 percent of analysed videos using professional drone footage, colour-graded imagery, and elaborate set design. Afrobeats-influenced visual tropes (street scenes, luxury lifestyle, communal celebration) dominated thematic content, while explicit social commentary was present in only 17.5 percent of videos. Female representation in video narratives remained primarily objectifying in 62.5 percent of cases. Directors identified Instagram aesthetic influence as the dominant shaping force in current visual style. The study recommends art direction training for music industry practitioners and critical discourse on representation standards in Nigerian music video production.
