Investigation of the Impact of Unemployment on Rising Crime Rates in Ondo State

📖 ABSTRACT/OVERVIEW

Unemployment among young Nigerians has reached crisis levels, and examining its direct contribution to crime rate escalation in Ondo State provides empirically grounded evidence for both economic and criminal justice policy in the South West zone. This study investigated the relationship between youth unemployment and crime rates in Akure and Ondo towns, Ondo State, South West Nigeria. A correlational survey design was adopted, combining secondary analysis of Ondo State Police Command crime statistics from 2018 to 2023 with a primary survey of 240 unemployed youth and 40 police officers. The survey assessed employment history, income-generation methods, criminal activity engagement, and law enforcement perspectives on unemployment-crime linkages. Pearson correlation between official unemployment figures and recorded crime rates showed a significant positive relationship (r = 0.71, p < 0.001) across the five-year period. Theft (61.7 percent of reported crimes) and robbery (23.8 percent) showed the strongest correlation with unemployment spikes. Among surveyed youth, 31.7 percent acknowledged involvement in income-generating activities on the legal-illegal boundary. Business owners in the survey reported that crime became noticeably worse during economic downturn periods, consistent with regression analysis results. The study recommends a joint economic empowerment and crime prevention programme for Ondo State, graduate employment incentive tax credits for employers, and integration of crime prevention components into state SMEDAN youth entrepreneurship programmes. Keywords: unemployment, crime rate, youth crime, Ondo State, crime prevention
