Investigation of the Physical Properties of Laterite Samples from Selected Quarries in Ogun State

Laterite is one of the most widely utilized construction and road-building materials in southwestern Nigeria, yet systematic characterization of its physical properties at local quarry sites remains incomplete. This study investigates the physical properties of laterite samples collected from six quarries distributed across three local government areas in Ogun State, South West Nigeria. Properties measured include particle size distribution, bulk density, specific gravity, porosity, moisture content, permeability, and compressive strength. Standard laboratory procedures from the American Society for Testing and Materials were followed for each measurement category. Samples were collected at depths of 0.5 m, 1.0 m, and 2.0 m to assess vertical variation within laterite profiles. Results indicate significant variability in physical properties between quarry sites, attributed to differences in parent rock type, weathering depth, and clay mineral content. The Sagamu quarry samples recorded the highest compressive strength values at 18.4 MPa, while Ijebu-Ode samples showed higher porosity and lower bulk density, indicating greater moisture absorption potential. Findings are contextualized against specifications for laterite use in sub-base course construction under the Federal Ministry of Works road design standards. The study provides quality benchmarks for laterite procurement in southwestern Nigerian construction projects and identifies quarries with material suitable for structural versus non-structural applications.
