Investigative Journalism, Public Interest Reporting, and Democratic Accountability in Nigeria: An Empirical Assessment

This study empirically assesses the impact of investigative journalism and public interest reporting on democratic accountability outcomes in Nigeria, examining whether investigative reporting generates measurable consequences for governance, corruption prosecution, and institutional reform. This study addresses a critical gap in African media effects research by moving beyond assessment of media coverage to examine downstream accountability outcomes. A mixed-method design is employed, first cataloguing 150 major investigative reports published by Nigerian media organisations between 2018 and 2023 and documenting outcome indicators including prosecutorial investigation, parliamentary action, executive response, policy change, and civil society mobilisation within 12 months of publication. Logistic regression identifies predictors of accountability outcomes, followed by 20 in-depth case studies of high-impact investigations using process tracing methodology. Findings reveal that only 34 percent of catalogued investigations generate any documented institutional response. Investigations involving financial corruption of public officials show the highest outcome probability (48 percent). Investigations co-published or amplified by international outlets generate significantly higher response rates, pointing to the role of external pressure. Elite target vulnerability, pre-existing civil society pressure, and electoral proximity are the strongest contextual predictors of accountability outcomes. Investigative journalism conducted by established platforms with legal resources generates better-protected sources and more durable stories. The study concludes that investigative journalism in Nigeria generates accountability outcomes selectively and recommends institutional support for legal protection, investigative journalism funds, and civil society-journalist strategic collaboration to improve impact potential.
