Language Revitalization Initiatives for Endangered Nigerian Languages: An Empirical Evaluation

Nigeria harbours a significant number of endangered languages, estimated at over two hundred by recent classifications, yet the effectiveness of language revitalization initiatives targeting these languages has rarely been empirically evaluated using comparable outcome measures. This study empirically evaluates three documented language revitalization initiatives targeting endangered languages in different geopolitical zones, focusing on the Ede Ica initiative in Kogi State, the Bade language literacy programme in Yobe State, and the Iyive language documentation project in Taraba State. Evaluation data were collected through pre- and post-initiative language competence assessments administered to participants in each initiative, interviews with programme coordinators, participant focus groups, and community attitude surveys. Competence assessment instruments were designed collaboratively with native speaker consultants for each language. Results indicate variable effectiveness across the three initiatives, with the literacy-based Bade programme showing the most robust competence gains and the documentation-focused Iyive project showing no measurable competence gains among community members not directly involved as speakers. The Ede Ica initiative shows intermediate results, with attitude change exceeding competence change in the short-term evaluation window. Cross-initiative analysis identifies community ownership, integration with existing community activity structures, and combination of awareness with structured learning activities as the factors most consistently associated with positive outcomes. The study argues for a multi-outcome evaluation framework for Nigerian language revitalization that measures attitude, competence, and intergenerational transmission as distinct dimensions.
