Language Socialization and Academic Literacy Development in Nigerian Universities: A Longitudinal Ethnographic Study

Language socialization theory proposes that individuals simultaneously acquire language and the cultural knowledge, social values, and cognitive frameworks of their communities through participation in social practice, and academic literacy acquisition in university contexts is productively analysed as a socialization process with significant consequences for academic success and intellectual identity formation. This dissertation presents a longitudinal ethnographic study of language socialization and academic literacy development in two Nigerian universities, tracing the socialization pathways of twenty students from first-year entry through to final year completion across contrasting institutional and disciplinary contexts. Fieldwork was conducted over three academic years at the University of Jos and the University of Uyo, combining extended participant observation in lectures, tutorials, writing workshops, and informal academic spaces; collection and analysis of student writing at six-month intervals; audio-recorded mentoring and supervisory interactions; and regular in-depth interviews with student and faculty participants. The theoretical framework integrates Schieffelin and Ochs's language socialization theory with Academic Literacies theory and postcolonial higher education studies to produce an original account of academic literacy socialization in Nigerian multilingual institutional contexts. Empirical findings document four distinct socialization pathway types, labelled apprentice convergence, strategic code-shifting, resistant peripherality, and bilingual integration, each associated with different academic literacy development trajectories and different institutional legitimization experiences. The dissertation argues that Nigerian universities implicitly socialize students into an academic literacy ideology that privileges monolingual English academic discourse while officially celebrating multilingualism, a contradiction with significant consequences for student success and institutional equity.
