Leadership Styles and Organizational Performance in Insurance Companies in South South Nigeria

📖 ABSTRACT/OVERVIEW

This study examines the relationship between leadership styles and organizational performance in insurance companies operating in South South Nigeria, with data collected from firms in Port Harcourt, Calabar, and Benin City. Leadership effectiveness is a key organizational driver in service industries, influencing employee motivation, customer service quality, and strategic execution. In the insurance sector, where technical knowledge must be combined with client relationship management and regulatory compliance, appropriate leadership styles are particularly important for sustaining competitive performance. This research employs a survey design with data from 180 employees and 45 senior managers across twelve insurance companies in the three cities. Questionnaires assess leadership style profiles using the Multifactor Leadership Questionnaire (MLQ), organizational performance indicators including premium growth, claims ratios, and staff turnover, and mediating variables of employee motivation and organizational commitment. Multiple regression analysis identifies the leadership style dimensions most strongly associated with organizational performance outcomes. Preliminary findings are expected to indicate that transformational leadership style is positively and significantly associated with organizational performance, while laissez-faire leadership is negatively associated. The study recommends leadership development programs incorporating transformational leadership training for insurance managers in the South South region.
