Length-Weight Relationship and Condition Factor of Catfish in Cross River, Cross River State

📖 ABSTRACT/OVERVIEW

This study determined the length-weight relationship and condition factor of Clarias gariepinus (African catfish) sampled from the Cross River in Cross River State, South South Nigeria. These biometric parameters provide essential information on fish population health, nutritional status, and suitability for harvest, and are fundamental tools in fisheries stock assessment. A total of 240 specimens were collected monthly over four months using multi-mesh gill nets and long lines at three sampling stations. Total length and body weight were measured immediately upon collection. The length-weight relationship was established using the allometric equation W = aL^b, and the condition factor (K) was calculated using the standard formula. The regression coefficient (b) value of 2.89 was close to the isometric value of 3, indicating near-isometric growth in the sampled population. The condition factor ranged from 0.97 to 1.26 across sampling periods, with the highest values recorded during the wet season when food availability is greatest. Fish sampled at the upstream station exhibited significantly better condition factors than those from the downstream station, where fishing pressure was more intense. Sex-based analysis revealed that females had marginally higher condition factors than males during the reproductive season. The study concludes that Clarias gariepinus in the Cross River maintains a generally healthy population, though localised overfishing at certain sites warrants closer management attention.
