Management of Home Economics Laboratories in Tertiary Institutions in Kano State: Challenges and Prospects

This study examines the management of Home Economics laboratories in tertiary institutions in Kano State, North West Nigeria, with a focus on identifying prevailing challenges and articulating prospects for improvement. Functional, well-equipped laboratories are indispensable to the effective delivery of practical Home Economics instruction, yet many institutions across Nigeria grapple with resource deficits and poor management frameworks. The study adopts a descriptive survey design, targeting laboratory supervisors, technicians, and Home Economics lecturers in five tertiary institutions in Kano Municipal and Nassarawa local government areas. Data were collected using a structured questionnaire and an inventory observation checklist. Objectives include assessing the adequacy of laboratory equipment, determining the effectiveness of laboratory management practices, and identifying administrative and financial barriers to optimal laboratory functioning. Recent literature confirms that underfunded and poorly maintained Home Economics laboratories in Nigerian tertiary institutions directly undermine the quality of graduates' practical competencies. Data were analysed using mean scores, standard deviation, and frequency tables. The Total Quality Management Framework guides the study, emphasising continuous improvement and stakeholder participation in resource management. Findings are anticipated to reveal critical equipment shortages and inadequate maintenance protocols. Recommendations address institutional management, the National Universities Commission, and state governments regarding dedicated laboratory funding and professional laboratory management training.
