📖 ABSTRACT/OVERVIEW
Dyslipidaemia is a major cardiovascular risk factor in patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus, and statin therapy is widely prescribed for lipid management in this population. This study undertakes a biochemical assessment of lipid profiles in type 2 diabetic patients on statin therapy attending a tertiary hospital outpatient clinic in Abuja, North Central Nigeria. A cross-sectional analytical design was employed, recruiting 150 diabetic patients on statin therapy for at least six months and 80 diabetic patients not receiving lipid-lowering therapy as a comparator group. Serum total cholesterol, LDL, HDL, triglycerides, and non-HDL cholesterol were determined. Glycated haemoglobin, fasting blood glucose, liver transaminases, and creatine kinase were also measured to monitor glycaemic control and statin safety. Statin type, dose, duration of use, and adherence assessed by pill count were documented. The study evaluates the proportion of patients achieving LDL treatment targets set by current international guidelines and identifies predictors of poor lipid control. Findings will guide the optimisation of lipid management protocols for diabetic patients in Nigerian tertiary care settings. Keywords: diabetic dyslipidaemia, statin therapy, LDL cholesterol, lipid profile, Abuja.
