Mental Health Screening in Occupational Health Programs at Selected Manufacturing Companies in Ogun State, South West Nigeria

Manufacturing industry workers are exposed to physical hazards, shift work, and occupational stress that contribute to elevated mental health morbidity, yet mental health screening is rarely integrated into occupational health programs in Nigerian industries. This study assesses the current state and effectiveness of mental health screening within occupational health programs at manufacturing companies in Ogun State, South West Nigeria. A cross-sectional observational design will be used, with structured facility assessments conducted at 12 purposively selected manufacturing companies in the Sagamu and Agbara industrial zones. Occupational health managers will be interviewed regarding screening protocols, referral pathways, and mental health policies. A random sample of 200 production workers will complete the General Health Questionnaire-12 (GHQ-12) and the Occupational Stress Index (OSI) to establish current mental health status. Descriptive statistics and logistic regression will examine the association between occupational stress and psychological distress, and chi-square tests will compare screening rates across companies. Findings will contribute to national occupational health standards and support the development of industry-specific mental health screening protocols in South West Nigeria.
