Mission and Poverty Alleviation: A Case Study of NGO-Linked Churches in Taraba State

This study investigates the contribution of NGO-linked churches to poverty alleviation efforts in Taraba State, North East Nigeria. Taraba State is characterised by high poverty indices, limited public services, and recurring communal conflicts that have displaced thousands of residents. A growing number of churches in the state have established non-governmental wings to address community development needs, and this study evaluates their effectiveness and theological motivation. Using a case study design, three churches with active NGO affiliates are selected from Jalingo, Wukari, and Bali Local Government Areas. Data are collected through interviews with twenty church-NGO leaders, 150 community beneficiaries, and five government social welfare officers. Programme documentation, financial reports, and community impact assessments are also reviewed. Findings indicate that faith-motivated NGOs demonstrate high levels of community trust and volunteer mobilisation but often face challenges related to funding sustainability, governance transparency, and programme duplication with secular organisations. The theological motivation of programme leaders is identified as a key driver of persistence and community responsiveness. The study recommends the adoption of professional NGO management standards within church-linked organisations and calls for donor frameworks that recognise faith-motivated development actors in Taraba State.
