Morphological Analysis of Igbo Verb Derivation Processes in the Nsukka Dialect

This research conducts a systematic morphological analysis of verb derivation processes in the Nsukka dialect of Igbo, spoken in Enugu State, South East Nigeria. Verb derivation in Igbo is a complex morphological process involving affixation, reduplication, and tonal modification, yet the Nsukka dialect presents derivational patterns that diverge from those documented for Standard Central Igbo. With a growing body of recent work on Igbo morphology remaining concentrated on Owerri and Onitsha dialects, the Nsukka variety remains comparatively under-described. The study draws on primary linguistic data collected from thirty native speakers through elicitation tasks, natural conversation recordings, and metalinguistic interviews. Data are analysed within a morpheme-based morphology framework. Findings document six productive derivational processes, including nominalisation through prefix attachment, reciprocal verb formation, and causative constructions achieved via light verb serialisation. The study identifies three derivational morphemes not previously catalogued in existing Nsukka Igbo descriptive grammar literature. The work contributes to the comparative dialectology of Igbo and provides baseline data for future computational and pedagogical applications.
