Networked Learning Communities and Knowledge Construction Among Postgraduate Students in Nigerian Universities: A Sociocultural Analysis

This study investigates how networked learning communities shape knowledge construction processes among postgraduate students in Nigerian universities, employing a sociocultural theoretical framework anchored in Vygotskian principles and activity theory. Online and hybrid networked communities have emerged as significant informal learning environments for postgraduate students globally, yet their knowledge construction dynamics in Nigerian higher education contexts remain undertheorised. A qualitative multiple case study methodology was employed, selecting four purposively sampled postgraduate networked learning communities operating across WhatsApp, Telegram, and dedicated research forums in the University of Ibadan, University of Jos, University of Nigeria Nsukka, and Ahmadu Bello University. Data were collected through digital ethnographic observation over six months, 40 in-depth interviews, and document analysis of community discourse archives. Activity theory-based analysis examined how community tools, rules, community structures, and division of labour mediated knowledge construction. Findings reveal that Nigerian postgraduate networked communities demonstrate rich collaborative knowledge construction characterised by distributed expertise, mutual scaffolding across geographic zones, and the integration of culturally embedded reasoning styles. Persistent tensions include leadership dominance effects and differential access based on network quality. The study makes an original contribution by generating activity theory-grounded insights into networked knowledge construction specific to resource-diverse, multi-ethnic Nigerian postgraduate contexts.
