Noise Pollution and Its Effects on Library Use in Anambra State Polytechnic Mgbakwu

This study investigated the effects of noise pollution on library use at Anambra State Polytechnic, Mgbakwu, in Anambra State, South East Nigeria. Noise is widely acknowledged as one of the most disruptive environmental factors in library settings, influencing user concentration, comfort, and willingness to utilise the library for extended periods. A descriptive survey design was adopted, and data were collected from 220 students using a structured questionnaire and a noise observation guide completed during library visits at different times of day. Findings revealed that noise levels were highest during mid-morning and post-lunch hours, driven largely by group conversations, mobile phone use, and noise from adjacent administrative offices. Most respondents indicated that noise had negatively affected their concentration and reduced the frequency of library visits. The study recommended enforcement of strict noise control policies, designation of separate zones for group work and silent study, and installation of soundproofing materials in key sections of the library.
