This research assesses occupational noise levels in a textile weaving mill located in Katsina State, North West Nigeria, examining compliance with permissible exposure limits and evaluating the adequacy of current hearing conservation measures. Textile weaving machinery, particularly shuttle looms and rapier weaving machines, is among the noisiest equipment categories in manufacturing, and prolonged exposure without adequate hearing protection is a well-established cause of occupational noise-induced hearing loss. This study employs a noise survey methodology using calibrated sound level meters and personal noise dosimeters to map noise exposure levels across the weaving hall, preparation department, and finishing section. Measurements were conducted across day and night shifts over three weeks to capture operational variability. Results reveal that noise levels in the main weaving hall range from ninety-four to one-hundred-and-one decibels A-weighted, substantially exceeding the eighty-five decibel eight-hour permissible exposure limit prescribed by the Federal Ministry of Labour and Employment. Hearing protection usage among operators is found to be inconsistent, with only forty-three percent of observed workers wearing provided earplugs correctly. Recommendations include engineering controls such as machine enclosures and anti-vibration mounts, improved hearing protection provision and enforcement, and establishment of a periodic audiometric testing programme for all exposed workers.
