Ocular Biometry and Corneal Diameter Among Adults in Kebbi State: Baseline Data for Cataract Surgery Planning

📖 ABSTRACT/OVERVIEW

Accurate ocular biometric measurements, including axial length, anterior chamber depth, corneal diameter, and keratometry values, are fundamental prerequisites for the calculation of intraocular lens power in cataract surgery. The absence of population-specific normative biometric data for patients in North West Nigeria leads to the use of non-representative reference values that may contribute to refractive surprises following cataract surgery. This study aims to document ocular biometric parameters and corneal diameter among adults in Kebbi State attending the Federal Medical Centre Birnin Kebbi. A-scan ultrasonography and keratometry will be used to measure axial length, anterior chamber depth, and average corneal curvature. Horizontal corneal diameter will be measured using a calliper. Data will be stratified by age, sex, and refractive error category. The study anticipates establishing a normative ocular biometric profile for the Kebbi adult population that will support more accurate intraocular lens calculations and reduce postoperative refractive errors for patients undergoing cataract surgery at this facility and similar institutions in North West Nigeria.
