Office Technology and Administrative Support Functions in IMT, Enugu

📖 ABSTRACT/OVERVIEW

The integration of modern office technology into administrative support functions is widely recognised as a driver of accuracy, speed, and productivity in institutional management. This study investigates the relationship between the adoption of office technology and the quality of administrative support functions at the Institute of Management and Technology, Enugu, focusing on secretarial services, document management, and inter-departmental communication. The study is anchored on the Technology Acceptance Model, which posits that the perceived usefulness and ease of use of technology determine the extent of its adoption and the quality of work outcomes it enables. A survey research design was adopted. The population included administrative secretaries, clerical officers, heads of department, and administrative managers, from which 210 respondents were selected through stratified random and purposive sampling. Data were gathered using a structured questionnaire, and responses were analysed using Pearson correlation and multiple regression. Findings indicate that staff who use computers, email platforms, and management information systems in their daily tasks perform significantly better on timeliness and accuracy metrics. However, limited access to functional computers in some administrative units and inadequate ICT training constrain technology adoption. The study concludes that office technology adoption directly improves administrative support quality at the institution. It is recommended that management equip all administrative units with modern ICT hardware and software, mandate basic computer literacy training for all support staff, and upgrade the internal communication platform.
