Parental Involvement, Teacher Support, and Academic Motivation as Predictors of Learning Outcomes in Primary Schools in Oyo State

📖 ABSTRACT/OVERVIEW

Understanding the combined predictive roles of parental involvement, teacher support, and academic motivation on primary school learning outcomes is essential for developing holistic guidance and educational policy in Nigeria. This study examined parental involvement, teacher support, and academic motivation as predictors of learning outcomes among primary school pupils in Oyo State, South West Nigeria. A predictive correlational design was used, with 450 upper primary pupils and matched teacher and parent data collected from twenty primary schools in Oyo East and Ibadan North local government areas. The Parent Involvement Scale, the Teacher Support Inventory, the Academic Motivation Scale-Primary, and terminal examination results formed the data sources. Multiple hierarchical regression was used. Findings indicated that all three predictor variables significantly contributed to learning outcomes. Teacher support was the strongest individual predictor, followed by academic motivation and parental involvement. Interaction effects between teacher support and parental involvement suggested synergistic benefits when both were high. The predictive model explained 52 percent of variance in learning outcomes, a substantially higher proportion than single-predictor models. The study recommended that counsellors facilitate structured teacher-parent partnership programmes and that academic motivation enhancement be incorporated into primary school guidance services across Oyo State. Keywords: parental involvement, teacher support, academic motivation, learning outcomes, primary school.
