📖 ABSTRACT/OVERVIEW
Uveitis encompasses a heterogeneous group of intraocular inflammatory conditions that can lead to significant visual morbidity if inadequately managed. Comprehensive epidemiological and outcomes data on uveitis in Nigeria's South South zone are scarce, limiting the ability to standardize clinical management. This study characterizes the anatomical pattern, etiological distribution, and clinical outcomes of uveitis among patients at Rivers State University Teaching Hospital, Port Harcourt. A retrospective longitudinal design will be employed, reviewing records of 220 uveitis cases managed over five years. Data extracted will include patient demographics, anatomical classification (anterior, intermediate, posterior, panuveitis), confirmed or suspected aetiology, diagnostic workup, treatment modalities, and visual acuity outcomes at six months and one year. Logistic regression will identify predictors of poor visual outcomes. The study anticipates anterior uveitis as the most common anatomical form, with systemic associations including tuberculosis, HLA-B27-related disease, and sarcoidosis contributing significantly. Findings will be submitted to the Rivers State University Teaching Hospital to guide the development of a structured uveitis protocol and interdisciplinary management committee. This research provides a much-needed epidemiological profile of uveitis in South South Nigeria and contributes to evidence-based management standards for this complex ocular condition in resource-limited settings.
