Philosophical Ethics and the Practice of Corporate Social Responsibility in the Oil Industry: The Case of Ondo State

This study examines the philosophical ethics of corporate social responsibility (CSR) as practised by oil companies operating in Ondo State, located in Nigeria's South West geopolitical zone. Ondo State hosts significant onshore and offshore petroleum operations, and the CSR programmes of operating companies raise philosophical questions about the moral foundations of corporate obligations to host communities, employees, and the natural environment. Using a descriptive philosophical design, the study engages with stakeholder theory in the philosophy of business ethics, the social contract framework, and Ubuntu relational ethics, supplemented by secondary literature published between 2020 and 2024. Documentary analysis of CSR reports from three major oil companies operating in Ondo State and interviews with 20 community leaders and business ethics scholars in Akure inform the primary data. Findings reveal that the CSR programmes of oil companies in Ondo State are predominantly grounded in philanthropic and reputational motivations rather than in genuine moral obligations, and that this motivational weakness generates inconsistent and inadequate community benefits. The study argues that a philosophically robust CSR framework grounded in stakeholder ethics and the social contract would impose stronger and more consistent obligations on operating companies.
