Photography as Documentary Art: Coverage of Environmental Degradation in the Niger Delta

Documentary photography occupies a critical role in generating visual evidence and public empathy for environmental injustices, and the Niger Delta's oil-related environmental degradation provides one of the most urgent and visually compelling subjects for documentary art in contemporary Nigeria. This study examines how Nigerian photographers are documenting environmental degradation in the Niger Delta, focusing on the visual strategies, ethical practices, and social impact of documentary photographic work produced between 2019 and 2024. A qualitative research design is employed, combining in-depth interviews with 15 documentary photographers whose work focuses on the Niger Delta with a systematic visual analysis of 200 selected photographs from exhibitions, online portfolios, and published photo essays. The study evaluates compositional strategies, the handling of human dignity in depicting affected communities, the use of colour versus black-and-white treatments, and the circulation of images through gallery, media, and activist channels. The theoretical framework draws on the ethics of documentary photography, visual ecology, and the advocacy art literature. The South South geopolitical context of the Niger Delta provides a site where art, activism, and environmental justice intersect in ways that have international significance. Recent literature has examined the politics of representation in Niger Delta photography, and this study contributes practitioner perspectives on the choices that shape how the degradation is rendered visible. Findings are intended for journalism schools, fine arts departments, environmental advocacy groups, and the National Gallery of Nigeria.
